Finished my 5th session of radiation on Friday and was on the road with my son, MacKenzie, road tripping in Euri (2001 VW Eurovan) the following Tuesday. Moving on and needing a break from all the cancer stuff…
Hitting the open road
A few scenic stops the first day including the historic Hubel Trading Post on the Navajo reservation, Monument Valley and the Four Corners to place our feet in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah before our first night camp in Mesa Verde National Park in SE Colorado.

Day 2 took us across Wolf Creek pass (elevation 10, 856 ft. and very little snow) and into eastern Colorado without a tree or bush in sight. Lots of wind turbines on the wide, open range. Midwest here we come – oh Toto, are we still in Kansas? Found a small oasis for camping somewhere in Kansas, finished dinner and settled for the night when a massive thunderstorm moved in. Fortunately, no tornados warnings.

Day 3 we hit Kansas City, Missouri, made a call to order and a quick stop for pickup at Slap’s BBQ, the BEST BBQ in Kansas City, right off I70! We were set for dinner at camp that night. Crossed Missouri and it was into Illinois and then Indiana where we found Friendly Creek County Park, using The Dyrt camping app, outside of Friendly Creek, Indiana. A nice little campground where we savored the fabulous Slap’s pulled pork sandwich and BBQ ribs.

Day 4 we crossed into Pure Michigan and landed in Mason MI, just in time to listen to my bro, Glen and his partner, Craig (the Two Fifths) playing a gig at the town center. Always FUN to have a brew and hear them play.

Day 5 we pulled into the lake house in Cheboygan, Michigan – 2400 miles. Euri ran strong and solid. We were weary from the long-haul trip, yet the sun was shining, and it was 70 degrees. An invigorating plunge into 58-degree big water was our welcome party.
We have arrived!
Oh, that cold, fresh water feels soooo good!
All well and peaceful in the north country.
Looks beautiful! We’re down in Ludington, MI for a couple weeks, then heading to the UP for a few days. Wish we could connect! Hope your healing journey continues well!
